Angeles Millwork & Lumber Co. and Hartnagel Building Supply have been owned by Arnold and Debbie Schouten since 1984. In January 2004 the Schoutens rewarded all the committed employees who helped make the stores successful by selling them the company, under what is known as an Employee Stock Ownership Program or ESOP. Both stores have thrived under the ESOP, growing at a pace that not only outstrips their former success, but also all predictions of future success! In looking to retire from the businesses they had owned and ran for twenty years, the Schoutens could have made many other decisions - like selling to an outside buyer or liquidating the businesses - but instead they decided to give back to the employees by giving them the opportunity to own the company.
